the wallet

sean o'connell's gift, carrying my postcards

✕

In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the photographer Sean O'Connell gives Walter a leather wallet with LIFE's motto engraved inside it. Walter throws it away without looking in it properly. This one carries my photographs instead, printed as postcards - open the cover like a book, pull a card up out of its slot, and turn it over to read the back.

the piece

lift the cover
  • astana, january 2026: placeholder drawing of a city skyline at dusk. on the back: a stand-in, until the photograph from astana is in. there is only ever room for a line or two on the back of a card.
  • seoul, may 2026: placeholder drawing of mountain ridges under a low sun. on the back: another stand-in. the photograph goes on the front; what it was like to stand there goes here.
  • the steppe, june 2026: placeholder drawing of a flat horizon under a big sky. on the back: still a drawing. the postmark takes its date from the card, the stamp its picture from the front.
  • a coast, august 2026: placeholder drawing of the sea at a low sun. on the back: a placeholder for a photograph of the sea, and a note that says where it was taken from.
  • a road, september 2026: placeholder drawing of a road running to the horizon. on the back: the last stand-in. whoever finds this wallet should find a real photograph here soon.

build it

Twelve steps, most of them reasons: why the hinge follows the finger in a straight line and then lets gravity finish, the one friction curve every pocket shares, why each card lives on a single number between the slot and the hand, where a card is allowed to change layers, why cards are drawn at reading size and scaled down, what a postmark needs to look inked, and where the negative hides and how the light gives it away.
